City Partners With Local Small Businesses to Offer Incentives for Those Vaccinated at Pop-Ups
SEATTLE (May 11, 2021) – As the City of Seattle approaches delivering 200,000 vaccines, Mayor Jenny A. Durkan today announced that the Seattle Fire Department (SFD) is hosting pop-up vaccination clinics this week in business districts in Ballard, Fremont, and West Seattle. These pop-ups are part of the City’s effort to bring COVID-19 vaccinations directly to Seattle residents and workers by coordinating with small businesses and community-based stakeholders to visit high-traffic areas and parks throughout the city. To-date, the City of Seattle has administered 187,000 vaccinations across its four City-affiliated sites and Mobile Vaccination Teams (MVT).
“Over 73 percent of eligible Seattleites have begun the vaccination process. This is an incredible achievement, and it speaks to our communities’ commitment to protecting the health and safety of our entire city,” said Mayor Durkan. “We know that Seattle’s road to recovery starts with vaccinations, and we won’t be able to truly reopen and gather safely until the vast majority of us are vaccinated. If you’re near Ballard, Fremont, or West Seattle, drop by, get your vaccination, and support a local small business. All Seattleites can do their part and help people in their life get vaccinated. We can’t beat this pandemic unless we work together.”
“Getting vaccinated has never been easier! My deep appreciation to the West Seattle Junction Association and Seattle Fire Department for bringing walk-up vaccination to the Junction this Saturday. Come out to show some love to Junction businesses and get your first or second vaccine shot. You’ll help protect yourself, your family, and your community – and the Junction is throwing in free ice cream to sweeten the deal. Seattle is doing a great job with vaccination – more than 70% of Seattle residents have started vaccination, and almost all complete their full vaccination doses. Let’s keep this going so our beloved local businesses can fully reopen,” said Councilmember Lisa Herbold (District 1, West Seattle/South Park).
“The Seattle Fire Department has been on the cutting edge of addressing the COVID-19 pandemic from setting up the first testing sites for first-responders in the nation, to providing mobile vaccination clinics to people who cannot easily leave their homes. As their program continues to expand, I am grateful they will be coming to Ballard for a walk-up vaccination clinic at the former Ballard City Hall – Marvin’s Garden Park — and to Fremont at Roxy’s Diner,” said Councilmember Strauss (District 6, Northwest Seattle).
The City is working with the Fremont Chamber of Commerce, Ballard Alliance, and the West Seattle Junction Association to host the SFD MVTs in Fremont and Ballard this Thursday, May 13, and West Seattle this Saturday, May 15. The City’s Office of Economic Development (OED) is coordinating with small businesses throughout the surrounding neighborhoods to ensure all staff who have not yet been vaccinated have the opportunity to receive a vaccination at these clinics. In addition to vaccinating small business owners and staff, the SFD MVTs will offer walk-up and roll-up vaccinations to all people who would like a vaccine.
The City has also partnered with three local small businesses to offer vaccination incentives at each pop-up. Fremont Coffee Company is offering a free coffee and a treat to the first 50 customers who receive their vaccination at the Fremont pop-up on Thursday. Salt & Straw is offering free ice cream to the first 50 customers who receive their vaccination at the Ballard pop-up on Thursday, and Husky Deli is offering free ice cream to the first 50 customers who receive their vaccination at the West Seattle pop-up on Saturday. The SFD MVTs will offer the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines at these clinics. SFD will also administer second doses if the patient provides proof of vaccination, and if their first vaccination was Moderna. Patients who choose the Moderna vaccine will be scheduled for their second dose at either the Rainier Beach or West Seattle vaccination hubs. Details for each clinic are as follows:

“The Ballard Alliance looks forward to partnering with the Seattle Fire Department, Mayor Jenny Durkan and Councilmember Strauss to bring the mobile vaccination team to Ballard this Thursday,” said Ballard Alliance Executive Director Mike Stewart. “Since the beginning of the pandemic, the Alliance has collaborated with the City to help Ballard business owners and residents through multiple challenges. We are appreciative of this opportunity to continue to work together and provide the Ballard community easy access to vaccination.”
“Vaccination will bring us closer to getting business and entertainment in Fremont able to operate at full capacity and ability,” said Brandi Gaines, President of the Fremont Chamber of Commerce. “The fight to end this pandemic through vaccinations provides hope for our small business owners and (in)famous events like the Fremont Fair and Fremont Oktoberfest, and Fremont Arts Council’s Solstice Parade. We are excited to welcome this vaccine event and soon invite the world back to the Center of the Universe. Thank you Mayor Durkan and the Seattle Fire Department for creating this opportunity!”
“As the downtown hub for West Seattle, the Junction merchants are thrilled to host the pop-up vaccination clinic this Saturday. Keeping our community safe through easily assessable vaccinations, plus a cone of Husky Deli ice cream is a win-win. Getting a vaccine couldn’t be easier this weekend too, we’ll have plenty of free parking in the 42nd and SW Oregon parking lot from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.,” said Lora Radford, Executive Director of the West Seattle Junction.
“The Seattle Fire Department is committed to give a vaccine to anyone who wants one. By deploying our Mobile Vaccination Teams out into the community at locations where we know people will gather, we are making getting a vaccine as easy as possible. Through our partnerships with the business districts, we are putting a special emphasis on ensuring all staff of small businesses have an opportunity to receive the vaccine, and also welcome all members of the public. Through each dose administered, we are making an impact,” said Fire Chief Harold Scoggins.
“Vaccination pop-ups are critical to ensuring equitable access to small businesses, workers, and community members because they meet people where they live, work and play,” said Pamela Banks, Director of the Office of Economic Development and Director of Recovery and Equitable Investments. “To achieve recovery, we need everyone to pitch in by getting vaccinated to protect yourself, friends, family, and local small businesses and workers. Thank you to all the small businesses in Ballard, Fremont and West Seattle for getting involved and working together to build community resiliency!”
Since launching its vaccination effort on January 14, the City of Seattle has administered over 187,000 vaccinations to eligible adults (over 116,000 individuals). These vaccinations have occurred at 88 Adult Family Homes, 90 affordable housing buildings with seniors and people with disabilities, 19 pop-ups, 18 permanent supportive housing buildings, two vulnerable youth-serving organizations, city sport events, and the four City-affiliated fixed vaccination sites. Approximately 46 percent of those vaccinated by the City identify as BIPOC communities.
For more information, including how to get vaccinated today, visit the City’s vaccination website at www.seattle.gov/vaccine. The site contains vaccination information in seven languages, and in-language assistance is also available over the phone.
Even as more residents get vaccinated, public health measures like social distancing, wearing a mask, and washing your hands remain critical. Please continue to follow all public health guidance, and visit this website from Public Health – Seattle & King County for more information.
