Mayor Durkan Issues Statement on Results of 2020 Presidential Election

Seattle (November 7, 2020) – Mayor Jenny A. Durkan issued the following statement on Vice President Joseph R. Biden and Senator Kamala Harris winning the 2020 presidential election:

Congratulations to President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris. It is so important that the President-elect affirms this is a day to start healing as a nation, and that he will be a President for all Americans.

I have waited a lifetime to see a woman elected to one of the highest offices in America. Thank you Kamala Harris for having the courage and strength to make it happen. And we thank your mother, who showed you the way and demanded you believe in yourself and treat others with respect and compassion.

Thank you to all who voted and participated in our democracy in ways big and small. This President had an outsized impact on all of us, both in Seattle and across our country by seeking to divide us rather than unite us.

In Seattle, the results of this election mean we have a federal partner who is committed to the fight against COVID-19, building a just and equitable economy, and restoring the promise of America for working people. Instead of spending energy and resources in courts to fend off actions that divide us, Seattle can focus on making positive progress together.

Seattleites did so much to help set America back towards the right path. Enjoy this day. There’s no rain in the forecast today, so get outside and take a walk. But don’t forget COVID-19 cases are climbing in our region. Mask up, limit social gatherings, and take care of one another.
