City of Seattle Update on Early Preparations for Snowfall

Seattle (January 12, 2020) – As snow and winter weather begins to fall on our region, the City of Seattle is closely monitoring the situation. Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing for the next several days with overnight temperatures in the low 20s.

To maintain roads for emergency travel and to ensure our most vulnerable communities are protected, the following early preparations have begun:

The Seattle Department of Transportation

  • Pre-treatment and street monitoring operations began at noon today.
  • SDOT has begun 24/7 operations at its Haller Lake and Charles Street facilities and the Transportation Operations Center is also in operations.
  • Staff have been working to ensure that resources and equipment are ready, including over 6200 tons of salt, and ensuring that liquid deicer is fully stocked.

The Seattle Human Services Department

  • Starting tonight, the City of Seattle, working in partnership with King County, has added shelter capacity at Seattle Center and King County Administration building. In addition, Seattle Center will act as a day shelter. You can find more information about the Seattle Center shelter here and King County’s shelter and day center here.
  • City Hall shelter has extended hours: 7pm to 7am, entry at all doors.
  • Families in need of shelter can contact Mary’s Place 24 hour Community Emergency Family Shelter Intake Line at 206-245-1026.
  • HSD is actively coordinating with Parks to open additional shelters if additional capacity is needed.

The City encourages residents to check in on their neighbors to make sure everyone can stay safe and warm in the event of a storm. Residents are responsible for ensuring the safety of their neighbors by clearing their own sidewalks.

You can expect updates on impacts of inclement weather to City of Seattle government, including libraries and park facilities tomorrow morning.
