Statement by Mayor Jenny Durkan on Earth Day

Seattle (April 22, 2019) Mayor Jenny A. Durkan released the following statement today in recognition of Earth Day:

“On Earth Day, Seattleites and people from around the world come together to celebrate the beauty of this planet that we call home, to stand together to renew our commitment to protecting the air we breathe and the water we drink – and to once again renew our commitment to combating climate change.

“From wildfire smoke that chokes our air, to droughts and rising sea levels, to changing weather and unprecedented natural disasters, we are already seeing the devastating effects of climate change. It is a national and global crisis that threatens health of our kids, our economy, and our security.

“Seattle is proud to be home to the organizer of the of first Earth Day in 1970, Denis Hayes, and to be home to so many advocates and innovators who share our commitment to protecting our environment and protecting this incredible place we call home. We will continue to lead the way in protecting our planet for future generations.”
