Seattle (February 27, 2019) – Mayor Jenny A. Durkan announced the creation of a new Office of the Mayor internship to honor Seattle civil rights hero and leader Ruth Woo. The Ruth Woo Intern will work with the Mayor’s Policy Team to continue Mayor Durkan’s commitment to RSJI, and will apply an equity lens to policy issues in the spirit of “Auntie Ruth.”
“Throughout her remarkable life, Ruth Woo championed equity, racial and social justice, and the rights and dignity of our most vulnerable communities,” said Mayor Durkan. “With this internship, we are honoring Ruth’s legacy by creating opportunity for people that Ruth always believed in so much: our young leaders. I am grateful to members of our community who have long advocated for this important testament to Ruth’s legacy.”

It’s a great opportunity to learn about and participate in making our City a better place for everyone,” said Dolores Sibonga, the first Filipina-American lawyer in Washington State, and the first woman of color to serve on the Seattle City Council.
The Ruth Woo Internship is a six-month internship for one student per cycle to gain experience researching and developing complex policy proposals. The Mayor’s Office is currently accepting applications for this internship, which will remain open until filled.
