SEATTLE (January 9, 2019) – Seattle Mayor Jenny A. Durkan issued the following statement upon City Attorney Pete Holmes announcement that the City will appeal the ruling issued on December 24 by Division One of the state Court of Appeals that struck down the Hotel Employees Health and Safety Initiative (I-124). The City Attorney’s Office will file a Petition for Review to the Washington State Supreme Court later this month.
“Seattle will continue to lead the way by protecting and creating opportunity for all workers in our community. With overwhelming support, voters spoke clearly that Seattle will ensure fair treatment in the workplace. I support City Attorney Holmes’ decision to appeal the court’s ruling, and we hope to ultimately see the Initiative upheld.” said Mayor Durkan. “Working with the City Council, we will put forward new legislation to provide the important protections for the health and safety of employees working at hotels in Seattle.”
