Seattle and Toronto Mayors Announce Friendly Wager on MLS Cup Match between the Sounders FC and Toronto FC

SEATTLE (December 7, 2017) – Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan and Toronto Mayor John Tory made a bet today on the outcome of the 2017 MLS Cup between Sounders FC and Toronto FC.

If the Toronto FC wins, Mayor Durkan will send a basket of goodies including Starbucks coffee, Beecher’s Homemade Cheese, Oberto Jerky, and Totem Smokehouse salmon as well as light City Hall red on Monday and wear a Toronto FC scarf. If the Sounders FC prevail, Mayor Tory would send a basket of goodies including Tim Hortons coffee, a St. Lawrence Market peameal bacon sandwich, and maple syrup as well as light the giant Toronto sign in front of City Hall green and wear a Sounders FC scarf.

In the spirit of the season, both Mayors will also be donating $100 for every goal scored by their respective teams to a local non-profit organization. Mayor Durkan will make her contribution through Seattle Shares, which allows City employees to contribute to non-profits across the City. Mayor Tory will make his contribution to the Daily Bread Food Bank.

“Seattle is rooting for our Sounders as they seek to repeat as MLS Cup champions and bring our Cup back home. All season long, they have shown the kind of grit, teamwork and passion to make us proud. And we know they will make us proud on Saturday in Toronto. Go Sounders and defend our cup!” said Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan.

“Toronto has some unfinished business to attend to when it comes to the MLS Cup and Seattle. The entire city is cheering on our Reds. We know they will make us proud and bring home the MLS Cup after this record-setting season. I’m confident our Reds – with their dedicated fans filling BMO Field and cheering them on – will be victorious. Come on you Reds!” said Mayor John Tory.

In addition, Mayor Durkan will hoist the Sounders FC flag at City Hall at 9:00 AM PT on Friday, December 8. Media interested in covering the event should gather at the plaza at Seattle City Hall located on the 4th Avenue side of the building.
