Seattle (September 17) – In honor of winning their third WNBA championship title, Mayor Jenny A. Durkan has transmitted legislation to designate the main pathway next to new Seattle Center Arena as “Seattle Storm Way.” Seattle City Council will formally consider this legislation next week to rename the section of 2nd Avenue North from Harrison Street to Thomas Street.
“Throughout this season and the playoffs, we saw grit and determination from a team like no other in the country. Our Storm have inspired young women and fans of all ages while leaving their mark on Seattle forever. For generations to come, visitors to the heart of Seattle Center will know that this is the home of the Storm. I’m confident Seattle Storm Way will also one day be the home of a Sue Bird statue to celebrate one of the country’s best athletes (only after Sue retires many years from now),” said Mayor Durkan.
“The Storm’s fierce approach, persistence and teamwork all season long has been a model for athletes everywhere – especially in Seattle,” said Council President Bruce Harrell. “As a parent whose daughter has been inspired by your tenacity on and off the court over the last decade, I thank you for providing our city with another point of pride in the sporting world: WNBA Champs!

I am proud to join the legions of Seattle basketball fans in congratulating our Seattle Storm in completing their WNBA Finals sweep and securing our 3rd team championship,” said Councilmember Debora Juarez. “The dedication displayed by these women makes them role models for the whole city.”
