Mayor Jenny Durkan Praises Ruling in U.S. District Court of Western Washington That Will Block

Seattle (August 27) – Seattle Mayor Jenny A. Durkan today praised a ruling by Judge Robert S. Lasnik of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington to maintain a ban on downloadable guns produced by readily available 3D printers. In his ruling, Judge Lasnik found the State Department’s argument to allow downloadable guns “ignores reality and is wholly unpersuasive.”  In June, the Trump administration reached a settlement agreement that will allow downloadable guns for unlimited public distribution in any form. Mayor Durkan stood with Washington State Attorney General in support of the multi-state lawsuit he is leading to block the administration’s action.

“It’s welcome relief that because of Attorney General Ferguson’s lawsuit, a federal judge has put the administration’s dangerous plan on hold and taken a responsible step to protect law enforcement, public safety, and our national security,” said Mayor Durkan. “Creating an unlicensed gun with a 3D printer should not be a ‘do-it-yourself’ download available to anyone. As a former federal prosecutor, I know untraceable and unregulated 3D-printed guns present a real danger to the residents of Seattle.”
